Israeli PM-Designate Benjamin Netanyahu Fails to Reach Coalition Agreement with Kadima Leader Tzipi Livni

Israeli prime minister designate Benjamin Netanyahu held a 90-minute meeting with Kadima leader Tzipi Livni on Friday but the talks failed to produce an agreement that would include the centrist party in a coalition government.

Earlier this month Netanyahu was tapped by President Shimon Peres to form a new government despite his Likud party holding fewer seats in the Knesset than Livni’s Kadima party. Netanyahu had promised to create abroad-based coalition but Livni stated her party would not compromise its beliefs to be included in that coalition.

Livni has continued to favor talks with Palestinians and a land-for-peace deal, a stance that many right wing-parties have opposed.

Following the talks with Livni the Kadima leader stated, “I have done everything possible to achieve unity... but to my great regret, I faced categorical rejection from Mrs Livni.”

Netanyahu has until April 3 to form the coalition government.
