President
Barack Obama is expected to reveal plans that will withdraw most U.S. troops
from Iraq by August 2010.
Obama
is expected to make the announcement when he arrives at Camp Lejeune, N.C. on
Friday afternoon. The plan is believed to involve the removal of nearly 100,000
troops from Iraq while up to 50,000 troops would remain after August 2010 to
assist Iraqi forces and protect U.S. interests.
According
to a senior administration official the remaining troops would be responsible
for a more limited mission that could include carrying out counter-terrorism
operations.
During
his presidential campaign Obama had promised to completely pull out troops
within 16 months of his presidency. The pull out plan is expected to go into
full force following Iraq’s elections scheduled for December.
While
U.S. troops are expected to be leaving Iraq they could find themselves in
Afghanistan as Obama has already sent an additional 17,000 soldiers to the country
earlier this month.
