The
Cleveland Browns have sent tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
for undisclosed draft picks on Friday, ending a five-year stay that was often
filled with injuries and controversy.
After
being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft the former
University of Miami standout suffered a broken right fibula two games into his
rookie campaign. Winslow, 25, was expected to make a complete recovery from the
injury and be ready for the 2005 season but that changed when he sustained a
torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after performing stunts on
his motorcycle. He sat out that entire season.
Winslow’s
first full season came in 2006 and he collected 89 receptions and in 2007 he
made his first appearance at the Pro Bowl after a season in which he hauled in
82 catches for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns.
In
2008 Winslow was hospitalized with a staph infection related to surgery on his
right knee and after complaining about his treatment the club suspended him for
a week.
Cleveland
made it known that they would be heading in a different direction during last
year’s NFL Draft when they selected Martin Rucker and on Friday those plans
were revealed as they dealt Winslow to the Bucs for undisclosed draft picks.
