Justice Department Formally Charges Ali al-Marri with Supporting Foreign Terror Group

A federal grand jury in Peoria, Illinois has formally charged Ali al-Marri with supporting a foreign terror group, paving the way for the Saudi-Qatari national to be tried in a civilian court. The grand jury indictment was handed up on Thursday and unsealed by the Justice Department on Friday

Al-Marri, known as the last “enemy combatant” on U.S. soil, has been held at a naval base in South Carolina since 2003. For more than five years no formal charges had been filed against him but on Friday he entered the court system and now faces up to 30 years in prison if he is found guilty.

The federal court charged al-Marri with “providing material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization.” Those charges were tied to al-Marri’s arrest while a student at Bradley University in 2001. Investigators found al-Marri to be in possession of more than 1750 credit card numbers and falsified identification documents. He was believed to have been in contact with an al-Qaeda financier and a search of his computer found documents tied to chemical warfare and lectures conducted by Osama bin Laden.

Al-Marri will now be transferred to Illinois where he will face the charges.
