Liposuction is one of the most common aesthetic surgeries, only second to breast augmentation. Innovations in the cosmetic surgery community have made it possible to use the extracted fat as filler for people who don’t want Botox and other chemical fillers.
Generally, the fat from liposuction becomes waste, but it is possible to have the fat transferred to areas of the body that need filling out like the cheeks, breasts or the buttocks.
For some people the buttocks along with the stomach and thighs are the areas of the body that cause the most dissatisfaction for liposuction patients. However, there are many people who find that their buttocks, breast and facial areas need to be filled out.
In the past, liposuction broke down the fat cells, which isn’t ideal for fat transfer. New liposuction equipment has been able to keep more fat cells intact after extraction, which makes it possible to transfer to different parts of the body. When fat cells are harvested correctly they are rich in stem cells and have more regenerative properties. This makes the cells ideal for transfer.
Fat transfers are still in an experimental stage so it is unclear how body will react to the fat transfer in the long run, but thus far the results are promising. Aesthetic surgeons are also looking to ways that stem cells can be utilized in other aesthetic surgeries.
