Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 85th birthday on Saturday with a vow to continue seizing lands owned by white farmers.
Mugabe was speaking at a rally in Chinhoyi, northwest of Harare, when he addressed the issue of white owned farms saying, “Farms will not be returned back to former farmers.” He continued, “Some farmers went to the SADC... but that's nonsense, absolute nonsense, no-one will follow that. We have courts here in this country that can determine the rights of people. Our land issues are not subject to the SADC tribunal.”
During the rally Mugabe also brought up the subject of majority ownership of companies operating in Zimbabwe saying, “We would want to see a greater participation of our people in them, not less than 51%, in certain companies we would have designated.”
Absent from the birthday rally was newly appointed Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who had announced he would not attend the events. Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party have called for an end to farm disruptions and have been opposed to Mugabe’s land seizures.
Mugabe actually turned 85 on Feb. 21 but celebrations were delayed for a week.
