NBA Scores: Phoenix Suns Overcome 49-Point Effort from Kobe Bryant to Beat Los Angeles Lakers

Shaquille O’Neal had 33 points and 7 rebounds, Leandro Barbosa added 22 points and 7 assists and Matt Barnes chipped in 26 points, grabbed 10 boards and dished out 7 assists as the Phoenix Suns (34-25) overcame a 49-point effort from Kobe Bryant to beat the Los Angeles Lakers (48-12) 118-111 on Sunday.

Barbosa and Grant Hill each scored nine points in the opening frame as the Suns built a 34-26 lead after the first quarter. The Suns led by as many as 15 in the second frame as Shaq put 13 points on the board but L.A. managed to cut their deficit to 64-56 after Derek Fisher hit a three-pointer with 4 seconds left in the half. Barbosa pushed Phoenix’s lead back to double digits though as he hit a pair of free-throws to close out the half.

The Suns ten-point lead was quickly erased in the third quarter as the Lakers came out and went on a 19-4 run with Kobe scoring 17 points in that spurt and L.A. was in front 75-70. Phoenix weathered the storm and closed the frame on a 21-6 run to take a 91-81 lead into the fourth.

An 11-3 spurt from the Lakers to open the fourth once again had them right back in the game as they trailed 94-92 but in the final minutes Barnes came up big for Phoenix as he pushed their 107-103 lead to 114-103 with four free-throws and a three-pointer and the Lakers never recovered.

Phoenix went to the free-throw line 22 times more than L.A. but were just 26-42 from the stripe while the Lakers hit 19-20 from the line.
