Suspected al Qaeda militants were among those killed in a US drone strike in Yemen Thursday. The strike targeted a police station in the al-Wathee district in Abyan province. The station had been taken over by militants. At least 7 militant vehicles were among equipment destroyed in the attack.
Two unidentified Yemeni officials say at least 50 people were killed and more than a dozen people were wounded. One official said the death toll was high because family members of militants had gathered in the area. A witness said 30 civilians were among the dead.
US officials have not commented.
