NFL’s Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith Missing in Florida

Two NFL players went missing Saturday off Florida’s Gulf Coast. Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper and free agent Corey Smith were among four boaters who haven’t returned from a fishing trip off Clearwater.

Friends and family of the pair say they were supposed to return Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard began a search around 2 a.m. Sunday. Heavy waves forced the search and rescue teams to search primarily by air.

Cooper’s wife Rebekah became worried Saturday night when she had not heard from her husband. She called one of Marquis’ fishing buddies Brian Miller, who contacted the Coast Guard and gave them the coordinates of where Cooper, Smith and former University of South Florida football players William Bleakley and Nick Schuyler were supposed to be fishing.

Search teams are focused on 750 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico. Authorities say they have not received a distress signal from the boaters, who were using Cooper’s 21-foot center-console vessel made by Everglades Boats.

“It feels like my greatest fear coming true – it doesn’t feel real. I’m just waiting for a phone call,” Rebekah Cooper says.
