India’s
Election Commission has announced the dates in which the general elections will
be held for a new lower house.
The
dates will be spread out over five days beginning on April 16 and ending on May
13 with counting of the ballots scheduled on May 16. The remaining election
dates include April 23 and 30 as well as May 7.
With
more than 828,000 polling stations to be set up for the elections the Election
Commission said the five phases were necessary to ensure staff and security
personnel were able to travel to various areas to monitor the voting of nearly
714 million eligible voters.
The
states of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir will hold elections in five phases.
Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest state while Jammu and Kashmir pose issues that
will require a strong security presence.
The
Lok Sabha (India’s lower house) is currently led by a Congress party coalition,
headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, but will face a fight with the Hindu
nationalist Bharativa Janata Party led by Lal Krishna Advani. Several smaller
parties are expected to play a role in forming the new government.
