Ali
Hassan al-Majid, long referred to as “Chemical Ali,” has been handed down his
third death sentence by an Iraqi court, all for separate incidents while acting
as an official in Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Monday’s
decision was concerning the mass killings of Shia Muslims in Baghdad in 1999.
He had already been sentenced to death for war crimes tied to 1988’s campaign
of genocide against Kurds and 1991’s response to a Shia uprising.
It
was the 1988 campaign against the Kurds that earned the official the nickname “Chemical
Ali” as he used poisonous gas to kill more than 100,000. In June 2007 he was sentenced
to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal for his participation in those attacks.
In
December 2008 he was again sentenced to death by the tribunal, this time for
the 1991 uprising that followed the first Gulf War. More than 100,000 Shias
were killed as they were crushed by the Iraqi military while attempting to
launch a rebellion against Hussein.
His
executions have been held up due to legal battles but he remains under U.S.
custody.
