President of West Africa’s Guinea-Bissau Assassinated by Soldiers

President Joao Bernardo Vieira of Guinea-Bissau has been assassinated by renegade soldiers in what is believed to be a revenge attack following the murder of the army chief of staff Tagme Na Waie.

Vieira was reportedly shot to death by the army as he was attempting to flee his house. The soldiers believed Vieira had been involved in the murder of the army chief of staff who died just a few hours earlier in an explosion.

According to some outlets Vieira had admitted to ordering the murder of Tagme Na Waie after the two had a falling out.

The army has insisted they are not carrying out a coup and have said they will respect the constitutional order of the country which will now place the head of parliament into the leadership position.
