Sri Lankan Cricket Team Attacked in Pakistan, at least Seven Killed

The Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by gunman while en route to a match against Pakistan in Lahore, leaving at least seven people dead and several members of the team injured.

Estimated 12 gunmen opened fire on police escorting the bus carrying the players, killing six officers as well as the driver. According to reports the dozen gunmen, armed with grenades and rocket launchers, ambushed the bus while it was passing along the Liberty Square roundabout.

Many have blamed the attack on inadequate security provided by the Pakistani government. Imran Khan, a former world class cricketer for Pakistan and now an outspoken politician, suggested “"This was one of the worst security failures in Pakistan. The Pakistan government guaranteed the Sri Lankan cricket team that they would provide them security.”

None of the attackers have been apprehended but police recovered a large number of grenades and rocket launchers at the scene.

Sri Lanka agreed to play in Pakistan after India pulled out of an agreed match after citing security concerns.

The injured players on the Sri Lankan cricket team include: Thilan Samaraweera (hospital), Tharanga Paranavitana (hospital), Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Chaminda Vaas, Assistant coach Paul Farbrace.
