Former Bosnian Serb Leader Radovan Karadzic Refuses to Enter Plea at UN Tribunal

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, facing war crimes charges related to genocide as well as crimes against humanity, has refused to enter a plea at a UN tribunal at The Hague declaring “This tribunal does not have the right to try me.”

Karadzic has argued that he was provided immunity when he entered into negotiations with U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke to end the Bosnian war in 1995. Thos claims of immunity have been repeatedly dismissed by Holbrooke. Despite Holbrooke’s denial of such a deal Karadzic told the judges, “I am challenging the jurisdiction of this tribunal on the basis of my agreement with the international community whose representative at that point in time was Mr. Richard Holbrooke.”

The UN tribunal is trying Karadzic over war crimes while he led Bosnian Serbs in the 1990s in brutal conflicts that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia. Among the charges outlined in the indictment are the shelling of Sarajevo that killed more than 12,000 civilians, the massacre at Srebrenica that left more than 8,000 dead as well as the deportation of civilians based on nationality or religious affiliation.

After spending more than a decade in hiding Karadzic was arrested last July. In his first appearance before The Hague he refused to enter a plea, telling prosecutors he would wait until all the charges against him were finalized.

The trial is expected to continue despite Karadzic’s apparent refusal to take part in his own defense.
