Coast Guard to Call Off Search for Missing Football Players

The Coast Guard has said they will suspend their search for three football players who have been missing since Saturday after their fishing boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hopes of finding Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, Detroit Lions free agent defensive lineman Corey Smith and former University of South Florida football player William Bleakley have waned as the Coast Guard spent its third full day searching for the men.

It is believed that the men drifted from the boat sometime early Sunday morning but a fourth man, Nick Schuyler, managed to hold on to the 21-foot boat that belonged to Cooper. The Coast Guard spotted Schuyler on Monday and after speaking with search crews it was learned that the other three men had lifejackets on when they drifted away.

Concentrating their efforts on a smaller area the Coast Guard continued their search through Monday and into Tuesday but after another day producing no signs of life they have said they would end their search at sundown. The main concern for the three men has been hypothermia and rescue crews have said three days out in the cold water could very easily prove deadly.

Schuyler was being treated for dehydration and hypothermia after a day and a half stranded in the Gulf.
