Afghanistan’s Election Commission Sets August Date for Presidential Vote

In an effort to ensure security measures were in place and enough time was granted to produce ballots Afghanistan’s Election Commission has set an August 20 date for the presidential election, nearly three months later than originally scheduled.

President Hamid Karzai had requested the vote be held in April but the commission said it would be impossible to ensure a fair election in such a short period of time.

The announcement was met with satisfaction from the UN and NATO which had pushed for the later date so that they could put systems in place for security. Karzai had argued that an August date went against the constitution of the country which states elections should be held 30 to 60 days before May 22.

The head of Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission was quoted as saying, “While we respect and accept the president decree, its implementation is not possible because all the problems which we listed previously, which are mainly security and weather conditions, are still in place.”

Karzai’s presidential term is scheduled to end prior to the August 20 election and it remains unclear what course the country will take between the two dates. Karzai has said he would like to remain in office until the election while his opponents are against that proposal.
