South
Africa has announced plans to reclaim land that was allocated to black farmers that
has not been used effectively since a land redistribution program was
implemented following the end of apartheid.
As
part of the “use it or lose it” reclamation effort the government would take the
idle land and redistribute it to other farmers and co-operatives. Much of the land
that had been redistributed following apartheid has remained idle and according
to Agriculture Minister Lulu Xingwana “those who do not use the land must
immediately be removed.”
Following
the end of apartheid in 1994 the government implemented a land redistribution program
that was designed to ensure 30% of all agricultural land be operated by the black
majority population by 2014. While almost all of that land has been
redistributed a large percentage remains unused and the government is
determined not to allow the country to fall into the same situation that
Zimbabwe now faces.
As
part of their land redistribution program Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe seized
farm lands owned by white farmers and turned them over to the black majority.
Since that program has been in place Zimbabwe’s agricultural industry has
nearly collapsed and the country is now facing food shortages.
