North Korea Issues Warning to South Korean Civilian Flights, Won’t Guarantee Safety

North Korea has issued a warning to its neighbor to the south, telling South Korea they would not guarantee the safety of civilian flights if they pass near their airspace over the Sea of Japan.

The warning comes just days before South Korea is due to kick-off a joint military exercise with the United States. North Korea has called the exercise a preparation for an invasion but those claims have been denied by both South Korea and the United States.

Each year South Korea and the U.S. hold joint-military exercises and both insist they are for defensive purposes only yet North Korea remains skeptical. They have criticized the exercises and stated no one knows what “military conflicts will be touched off by the reckless war exercises.”

North Korea recently announced plans to launch a communications satellite in the near future but many believe that to be a front for a test firing of a long-range missile.
