NATO
ministers have agreed to resume talks with Russia and have expressed hope that
they could establish a “fresh start” in their relationship.
That
relationship was severely strained last year when Russia invaded Georgia
following a skirmish in South Ossetia. For six months NATO refused to carry on
talks with high-level Russian contacts in response to what they considered an
unjustified act of war.
U.S.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the two sides had mutual areas of
interest including Afghanistan stating, “We can and must find ways to work
constructively with Russia where we share areas of common interest, including
helping the people of Afghanistan.”
According
to a statement released by the Russian foreign ministry the “decision is a step
in the right direction.”
