World Baseball Classic: U.S. Uses Longball to Down Philadelphia Phillies in Exhibition

The United States continued preparation for the World Baseball Classic and on Thursday they used the longball to get past the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6.

Chipper Jones highlighted a four-run third inning for the U.S. with a three-run bomb off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick to put them in front 4-1 by the end of the frame.

In the fourth inning the U.S. returned to the power game as Ryan Braun and Brian McCann each hit solo blasts. Adam Dunn then added a three-run bomb in the top of the fifth inning to push the advantage to 9-1.

Philadelphia responded in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan Howard hit a three-run homer off Matt Lindstrom and they added runs in the sixth and eighth before Jonathan Broxton closed the door on Philly with a perfect ninth inning for the U.S. squad.

The U.S. opens their World Baseball Classic schedule on Saturday when they face Canada.
