New
York Yankees converted starter Joba Chamberlain had a meltdown on the mound
Thursday afternoon as he faced just five batters, walked four and gave up a hit
without recording an out in a 6-0 loss to Canada in a World Baseball Classic
exhibition.
Chamberlain
was lifted in the first inning and charged with five runs, the final two coming
when Jonathan Albaladejo came on in relief and gave up a two-run double to Matt
Stairs. Stairs would eventually come around to score on a sacrifice fly to account
for all six runs in the opening frame.
After
the first inning flop the Yankees pitchers settled down allowing just two hits
but Canada’s pitching was surprisingly strong as Scott Diamond tossed two
hitless innings to start the game and New York’s bats never got started.
Canada
opens their World Baseball Classic schedule on Saturday when they face the United
States.
