South Korea Re-routes Flights Following North Korea’s Warnings

South Korea has re-routed several flights following a threat issued by North Korea that declared it could not guarantee the safe travel of airlines flying near or over their airspace.

The warning issued by North Korea came just days before South Korea is scheduled to hold joint military exercises with the United States. North Korea has long opposed the annual exercises but the threat to airline safety has increased tension between the neighboring countries and drawn the condemnation of the international community.

South Korea has called on North Korea to immediately withdraw the warning as Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyeon stated, “Threatening civilian airliners' normal operations under international aviation regulations is not only against the international rules but is an act against humanity.”

While South Korea has demanded the threat to be withdrawn both Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have re-routed nearly 200 flights over the next two weeks, adding an additional cost to each flight.
