Japanese officials have suspended all cattle shipments from Fukushima prefecture until further testing can determine if the beef is being contaminated with radiation from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano announced the ban on Tuesday. Prime Minister Naoto Kan apologized to parliament for “not being able to prevent this from happening.” Health officials believe Fukushima cattle could have been contaminated by eating hay stored outside.
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant began leaking radiation after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami caused the meltdown of three reactors. Workers continue to make progress in controlling the crisis.
