Surfer Killed in Pacific Shark Attack

A 19-year-old French student studying in New Caledonia in the French Pacific was killed on Friday when he was attacked by a group of sharks while surfing.

According to witnesses the young man had been in the water when a number of sharks attacked him, ripping off one of his arms and biting his leg. He was pulled into a nearby boat and rushed to shore but died before paramedics could arrive.

It was the first fatal shark attack in the area since 2007.
