Authorities in Helmand Province, Afghanistan have confirmed 7 officers with the national police force were killed Monday in a shooting at their barracks near the city of Lashkar Gar. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said one of their militants also stole equipment from the officers.
"The policemen were having lunch in their barracks when they were killed. We are not sure if the killers were policemen or some strangers who came as guests,” a spokesman for the governor of Helmand told CNN.
The attack came on the heels of NATO forces handing over control of certain areas of Afghan forces. Afghan forces will receive control of Lashkar Gah from NATO on Wednesday.
