Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change party will launch its own investigation into the cause of Friday’s car crash that killed Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s wife, Susan.
Susan Tsvangirai was killed on Friday when the car she was traveling in with her husband slammed into a truck. Susan died from her injuries while Morgan Tsvangirai was hospitalized with slight injuries. It was later learned that the truck they hit belonged to an organization that was related to the U.S. government aid agency USAID.
There have been various reports concerning what caused the accident with some accounts saying the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into Tsvangirai’s lane and other accounts have stated the driver hit a pothole that sent him across the lane. The truck then side-swiped the car and caused it to roll over three times before it came to a rest.
While the MDC has not suggested foul-play in the accident the party’s general-secretary, Tendai Biti, had been angered by the fact there had been no police escort provided Tsvangirai. He said the tragedy could have easily been averted had the PM been granted the simple security measure.
Morgan Tsvangirai and Susan had been travelling to his rural home in Buhera where he was to hold a rally this weekend. They had been married since 1978 and had six children together.
