Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai Agrees to Election Postponement

Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has abandoned his pursuit for an April election, accepting his country’s Election Commission to open polls in August.

While Karzai has accepted the Election Commission’s decision he has also stated that he intends to remain in office until the election is held, that despite the fact his presidential term ends on May 21.

Karzai had been pushing for an April election, in accordance with the country’s constitution, but the Election Commission determined that it would be impossible to ensure a fair election in such a short time. That decision was made based on security issues and concerns about providing ballots.

Karzai has insisted that he will remain in office for the three months that follow his term’s end and the election while his opponents favor a transitional body be put in place.
