Riot police called in to break up a protest in Malaysia’s capital city Kuala Lumpur used tear gas to disperse thousands of demonstrators who had gathered to voice their disproval over the use of English in local schools.
For six years Malay schools have been teaching math and science in the English language in an effort to improve language skills but many in the country favor a return to the Malay language.
The protesters had planned on peacefully marching to the royal palace but riot police began firing tear gas and apprehending some of the demonstrators. Police said they had no choice in the matter as they had already established with organizers an agreement that there would be no rallies in the capital city. When that agreement was broken they were forced to use tear gas to break up the march to the royal palace.
