NCAA Men’s Basketball Scores: #3 Pittsburgh Panthers Drop #1 Connecticut Huskies for Second Time

Sam Young scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Levance Fields added 10 points and 12 assists and DeJuan Blair chipped in 8 points and 8 boards as the #3 Pittsburgh Panthers (28-3, 15-3) held off a late charge by the #1 Connecticut Huskies (27-3, 15-3) to earn a 70-60 victory in Big East play on Saturday.

Young was a dominant figure throughout the game and his 16 first-half points gave the Panthers a 38-28 advantage at the break. That lead was pushed to 42-28 in the opening minutes of the second half and they held a double-digit advantage for nearly ten minutes before Connecticut made their run.

Trailing 52-38 Jeff Adrien got things going for the Huskies with a layup and then A.J. Price got hot and buried a triple, hit a pair of free-throws and hit another three-pointer in just over a minute of action. Stanley Robinson then threw down a dunk to cap a 12-0 run to pull Connecticut to within 52-50.

That’s when Young stepped up once more as he stopped the bleeding with a layup and then a dunk. Price then sank another three-pointer to keep the Huskies within range at 56-53 but the Panthers ran off seven straight to jump in front 63-53 and Connecticut had no more answers.

Entering the year Pittsburgh had never secured a win over a top-ranked school and now the Panthers have accomplished the feat twice in less than a month and both times the Huskies have been the victim.
