Eagan, Minnesota Orthodontist Participates in Junior Achievement
Minnesota Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth recently began teaching a new class of kindergartners at Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan through her volunteer efforts with Junior Achievement.
This marks the sixth class Eisenhuth has taught this academic year.
Eisenhuth got involved in Junior Achievement six years ago after the school her children attended sent home letters to parents seeking their involvement, she said.
“I enjoy being involved in my children’s education and I saw this as a great opportunity to teach kids of all ages some very important information,” Eisenhuth said.
Once Eisenhuth is assigned a class, she conducts the lessons via an assigned curriculum weekly for five to six weeks, depending on the age of the students and the curriculum involved.
For example, Eisenhuth recently taught fifth graders numerous skills via a mock city that was set up for the lesson.
Students interviewed for jobs, went to work, received paychecks, learned how to deposit money into their banking accounts and had the opportunity to spend some of their earnings.
“This was an opportunity for them to learn about how the economy works and how businesses operate,” she said. “I think these exercises get kids thinking ahead about their future.”
One fact Eisenhuth stresses to her classes is the importance of education.
“I tell these students that education is important and the more of it they have, the more choices are available to them in the working world,” she said.
Junior Achievement is a worldwide organization devoted to preparing students for successful careers in a global economy. JA programs educate students on subjects including financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness, according to the organization’s Web site (http://www.ja.org/about/about_news_fact.shtml).
The program reaches 8.3 million students per year in 339,000 classrooms and afterschool programs throughout the world. These programs are taught by 287,000 classroom volunteers from all walks of life, including business people, college students, parents and retirees.
“I’m happy to be part of an organization that teaches students real-world information,” Eisenhuth said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to take information the students may previously have seen only in a textbook and walk them through a real-world scenario where they must apply that information.”
Junior Achievement was founded in 1919 by AT&T President Theodore Vail Strathmore Paper Co. President Horace Moses and Sen. Murray Crane of Massachusetts. It is funded through corporations, foundations and individual donors from throughout the world.
