Doctors are increasingly shying away from prescribing opiod narcotics for chronic pain, citing their tendency to become addictive and abused. Instead, they are increasingly suggesting holistic methods, such as the Freedom Center’s holistic drug rehabilitation program, which stress exercise, alternative therapies (without the use of drugs), proper amounts of sleep, and vitamin and mineral supplements.
Studies done by the Institute of Medicine show that for people prescribed narcotic opiods for chronic pain, about 3% develop an addiction or abuse them, and 12% showed atypical drug related behavior. When one considers the fact that an estimated 116 million American adults experience some sort of chronic pain, this means nearly 4 million American adults are addicted to prescription painkillers. Often, many people who have chronic pain do not know the source of the pain, or are given prescription narcotics to treat the pain rather than a full diagnosis and treatment of the cause, often leading to dependency. This is where the holistic drug rehabilitation program at the Freedom Center can help.
The Freedom Center’s holistic drug rehabilitation program centers on the tenets suggested by doctors for managing pain without narcotics.
Exercise: People participating in the program are encouraged to exercise each day and make use of the sand volleyball court, basketball court, and gym with free weights and exercise machines, and play baseball or softball at one of the local community fields nearby. In addition, walks around the property (approx. 10 acres) and surrounding area are common.
·
Alternative Therapies: The Freedom Center uses massage therapy and extroversion techniques to help people get through their pain and withdrawal symptoms when coming off of narcotics and/or alcohol. They supplement this with a vitamin and mineral regimen, to help replace and restore what the body has lost during use of narcotics and other substances.
·
Sleep: Medical professionals have stated that a lack of quality REM sleep can lead to increased sensitivity to pain. This can be especially prevalent among opiod users, who often experience acute pain and sleeplessness due to opiod withdrawal. At the Freedom Center, the combination of quality diet and exercise, natural supplements, and relaxation techniques ensure quality sleep is achieved and maintained.
·
Supplements: All persons participating in the program are given combinations of vitamins and minerals during the Withdraw and Sauna portions of the Freedom Center program and all are encouraged to continue them throughout the duration of the program.
The holistic drug rehabilitation program at the Freedom Center has been helping people live substance free lives for years.
