Zimbabwe’s
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has tried to put to rest talk of foul-play and
declared the car crash that killed his wife last week was an accident and not the
work of political opponents.
Tsvangirai
had been driving with his wife, Susan, just south of Harare on Friday when
their SUV was hit by a truck, killing her and leaving him injured. The newly
appointed Prime Minister has returned to Zimbabwe after being flown to Botswana
for a brief period of recovery.
Speaking
to a group of supporters outside his house Tsvangirai stated, “When something
happens, there is always speculation but I want to say in this case, if there
was any foul play, it was one in a thousand.” Tsvangirai went on to say, “I
want to thank God giving me 31 years with my wife.”
Many
quickly speculated that President Robert Mugabe may have had something to do
with the accident as he has had a long history of conflict with the Movement
for Democratic Change leader but there was no sign of foul play at the scene.
Mugabe, along with his wife Grace, visited Tsvangirai in the hospital Friday
evening following the accident.
The
truck driver in the accident is expected to plead not guilty in court as his
lawyers have blamed road conditions for the crash.
