North
Korea has placed its military on full combat alert as the United States and
South Korea begin their annual joint military exercises.
Along
with the heightened military alert North Korea has warned that any attempt to interfere
with a planned satellite launch could result in war. The war warning is the latest
aggressive act from North Korea who had earlier stated they could not guarantee
the safety of South Korean airlines that past near their airspace.
As
a result of the airspace warning South Korea rerouted several hundred flights.
North
Korea has insisted their planned satellite launch was for peaceful purposes but
South Korea, the United States and several other countries have called it a
guise to test-fire a long-range missile. That planned launch was the focus of the
most recent warning as Pyongyang warned, “We will retaliate any act of
intercepting our satellite for peaceful purposes with prompt counter-strikes by
the most powerful military means.”
The
joint exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea will last 12
days and involve about 50,000 troops.
