The
United States is preparing to file a complaint with China’s military attaché in
Washington regarding the “aggressive” actions of five Chinese ships toward an
unarmed U.S. navy vessel in the South China Sea.
According
to reports the USNS Impeccable endured days of “increasingly aggressive” acts
by the Chinese ships and those acts continued despite efforts from the U.S.
crew to halt the aggression. The severity of the situation escalated and
reached a serious stage on Sunday when, according to a Pentagon statement, “On
March 8, 2009, five Chinese vessels shadowed and aggressively maneuvered in
dangerously close proximity to USNS Impeccable, in an apparent coordinated
effort to harass the U.S. ocean surveillance ship while it was conducting
routine operations in international waters.”
In
an act of defense the USNS Impeccable sprayed fire hoses at one of the ships
but the Chinese crew were said to have disrobed and continued to close within
25 feet of the vessel. The Chinese ships demanded the navy vessel leave the area
despite international laws that protected the U.S.’s right to travel the waters.
The
Chinese government has not responded to the charges.
