U.S.
President Barack Obama ended a nearly eight-year ban federal funding for stem
cell research when he signed an executive order on Monday that pledged to “vigorously
support” new research that could lead to medical breakthroughs.
The
controversial step was welcomed by many who have seen the advancement of stem
cell research as a path to finding cures and treatments for a variety of
debilitating diseases yet many opponents continued to stand against the
research, questioning the morality of using human embryonic stem cells.
Former
President George W. Bush blocked the use of government funding for research on
human embryonic stem cell lines created after August 9, 2001, thus providing no
new stem cell lines for scientists to study.
Obama
was sure to point out that while he was a man of faith the role of the government
was not to block the scientific advancement of stem cell research. He did
ensure that there would be a “delicate balance” and strict ethical guidelines
would be put in place to prevent things like human cloning.
