NCAA Men’s Basketball AP Top 25 Week 17: UNC Tar Heels Edge Pittsburgh Panthers for Top Spot, UConn Tumbles to #3
With
the NCAA men’s basketball regular season wrapping up and conference tournaments
already in action the Week 17 AP Top 25 rankings could play a major role in
shaping the seeds for the NCAA Tournament and after a busy week it looks like the
North Carolina Tar Heels and Pittsburgh Panthers have cemented their #1 seeds
as they finished 1-2 in the most recent rankings.
North
Carolina took care of the then #7 Duke Blue Devils to wrap up the ACC title and
grabbed 35 votes for the #1 ranking while Pittsburgh knocked off the then #1 Connecticut
Huskies for the second time this year.
The
loss didn’t hurt Connecticut much as they dropped just two spots to #3 and are
a favorite for a #1 seed come tournament time but they may have to avoid an
early loss in the Big East tournament to seal the deal.
Memphis
continued their push for a #1 seed after picking up a win against Houston and
then blasting Tulane to finish 16-0 in Conference USA play. They could be in a
fight with Louisville for that #1 seed as the Cardinals managed to wrap up the Big
East title with a win over West Virginia.
The
Big East has four of the top ten teams in this week’s rankings while the ACC
placed three teams in the top nine.
