Terry Sedlacek Charged in Maryville, Illinois Church Shooting

Investigators have charged 27-year-old Terry Sedlacek in the shooting death of a Maryville, Illinois pastor. Sedlacek is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the Sunday shooting at First Baptist Church in Maryville.

Sedlacek opened fire during the 8 a.m. church service. Pastor Fred Winters was standing at the pulpit when Sedlacek walked up and began shooting. He fired four shots, one hitting Winters’ bible and the others hitting Winters. After his .45 caliber pistol jammed, the suspect pulled out a knife but was tackled by several worshipers.

Two men were injured while trying to subdue Sedlacek. Sedlacek also suffered knife wounds but it was unclear if he stabbed himself or was accidentally stabbed while being tackled.

“The only think we know is that the suspect said something to the pastor and the pastor said something back to him. We don’t know what that was. It was almost as if the pastor may have recognized him, but we’re not sure about that at all,” says Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent.

The two injured worshipers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Sedlacek’s injuries are “very serious.” Winters was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
