Bolivia’s
President Evo Morales has ordered a U.S. diplomat accused of colluding with
opposition groups to be expelled from the country.
Morales
ordered the expulsion of Francisco Martinez after alleging he had ties to
groups who had organized violent protests. The U.S. government has died the claims
and said Martinez, a political officer at the U.S. embassy in La Paz, has done
nothing wrong.
The
announcement of the expulsion was made at a news conference on Monday in which
Morales stated, “Today, I've decided to declare Francisco Martinez... persona
non grata.” He went on to defend the decision saying they had conducted “deep
investigations” which revealed Martinez’s involvement with the opposition
groups.
This
is the second U.S. diplomat that Morales has ordered expelled. In September he
sent U.S. ambassador Philip Goldberg home following similar allegations.
