Alleged al-Qaeda Agent Appears in U.S. Court, Facing Charges of Supporting Terrorism

After being held in military custody for more than five years Ali al-Marri has had his day in court as the alleged al-Qaeda agent appeared in a South Carolina court to hear charges that he now helped support terrorism.

Al-Marri was arrested shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and charged with credit card fraud and after two years in custody he was labeled an enemy combatant and transferred to a naval jail in South Carolina. Due to his status as an enemy combatant al-Marri was held indefinitely without charge.

Shortly after taking office President Barack Obama ordered a review of al-Marri’s case and it was then determined he would be charged with supporting terrorism. He is expected to be transferred to Illinois for his trial, the state in which he was originally arrested.

The 43-year-old joint Saudi-Qatari national is also facing charges of conspiracy.
