The Big East men’s basketball tournament kicks off on Tuesday with four games on the slate and every game could be the last for each school.
In the day’s opener the Cincinnati Bearcats (18-13, 8-10) will take on the DePaul Blue Demons (8-23, 0-18) at noon. The two teams met just once this year with the Bearcats wining 59-55 back in January. Cincinnati would likely need a very deep run in the Big East tournament to have a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The Georgetown Hoyas (16-13, 7-11) will face off with St. John’s Red Storm (15-16, 6-12) in game two on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Georgetown started the season 10-1 including a win over Connecticut but then lost 10 of their final 13 to put them in need of a Big East tournament championship to earn a bid to the dance. St. John’s just beat the Hoyas last week 59-56 in overtime.
Game three will feature the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (18-13, 8-10) squaring off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11-20, 2-16) at 7:00 p.m. Notre Dame had been ranked as high as #9 earlier this year but a seven game slide and then losses to Connecticut and Villanova at the end of the year has put them in need of a very deep run in the Big East tournament to even have a shot at dancing. The Irish beat Rutgers by five in their only matchup this year.
The night will end with the Seton Hall Pirates (16-14, 7-11) taking on the South Florida Bulls (9-21, 4-14) at 9:00 p.m. Both teams would need a miraculous Big East tournament championship to make the NCAA tournament. Seton Hall beat USF by 15 earlier this year.
