Big East Tournament First Round Scores: St. John’s Stuns Georgetown Hoyas to Advance to Second Round

The Big East tournament has already seen a pair of upsets and it’s just two games into its run as the St. John’s Red Storm (16-16, 6-12) dropped the Georgetown Hoyas (16-14, 7-11) 64-59 on Tuesday to advance to the second round.

Paris Horne led all scorers with 23 points on 7-17 shooting while Sean Evans provided a huge double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds to score the upset.

Georgetown actually held a narrow 26-23 late in the first half but the Red Storm closed with an 8-0 run to take a 31-26 advantage into the break. St. John’s pushed their lead to 47-35 halfway through the second but the Hoyas put together a 12-0 run to tie the game.

Instead of folding the Red Storm responded as Horne pushed a one-point lead to seven with a pair of three-point plays with 2:39 left in the game and the Hoyas had no more answers.

The loss ends the Hoyas hopes of an NCAA bid while the Red Storm would need a miracle run through the Big East tournament to have a chance.
