Great White Shark Jumps Onto Research Boat in South Africa

A 1,100 pound Great White shark became trapped on a research boat off the coast of South Africa Tuesday after it jumped out of the water and landed on the stern of the vessel.

The seven team crew on board the Cheetah was monitoring shark activity in Mossel Bay near Seal Island as part of a research project for Oceans Research when the incident occurred. The 10-foot shark struggled to free itself, but became stuck. Fuel lines were damaged in the struggle and the Cheetah had to be towed back to harbor. The research team poured water on the shark’s gills to keep it alive until a crane was used to lift it out of the boat and drop it into the water.

"It is impossible to predict everything that can happen. What is important is how you respond to such situation. No one was injured and the shark survived, this is a credit to our team, the port authorities and members of the community who assisted,” the research team wrote on their blog.
