Over a dozen people died early Wednesday in Eastern Uzbekistan when buildings were damaged by a powerful earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the epicenter of the 6.1 magnitude tremor was located in neighboring Kyrgyzstan, but Uzbekistan’s Fergana region also felt the jolt.
Uzbekistan’s Emergency Ministry said numerous buildings across Fergana were damaged. At least 13 people were killed and 86 others were injured. Widespread damage was also reported in the border region of Kyrgyzstan, but the country has not reported any causalities.
Residents of both countries described the jolt as being short but powerful.
