The
Iraqi High Tribunal has sentenced Tariq Aziz, the former foreign minister and
deputy prime minister under Saddam Hussein, to 15 years in prison for his
involvement in the execution of 42 flour merchants who had been accused of
profiteering during economic sanctions.
Aziz
argued that the executions were part of his political duties and that he was
not personally responsible for the deaths.
Aziz
has been in custody since surrendering to U.S. forces in April 2003 and the
Iraqi High Tribunal ruling was his first conviction, he had earlier been acquitted
in a trial tied to the 1999 killing of Shia Muslim protesters.
