Australia
has become the first Western country to pledge funding to Zimbabwe since its
adoption of a power-sharing government headed by President Robert Mugabe and
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
The
Australian government has said it would provide about $6.4 million to water,
sanitation and health services that have been left in near ruins since a volatile
presidential election dating back to early 2008.
Much
of Zimbabwe lacks clean drinking water and proper sanitation, two major
contributors to a cholera outbreak that has killed thousands in the country.
That cholera outbreak has been difficult to stop as the health sector has been
without the proper medicines to fight the outbreak.
Prior
to the power-sharing deal many Western countries had imposed sanctions and
refused to provide aid as Mugabe was considered to be the problem. Those
sanctions remain in place by the United States and the UK who have said they will
wait to see evidence that the power-sharing deal is genuine.
