Big East Tournament Men’s Basketball Round 2 Schedule: Providence, Notre Dame Facing Must Win Games to Keep NCAA Tournament Hopes Alive

There were no shortage of upsets in day one of the Big East conference tournament on Tuesday as the Cincinnati Bearcats and Georgetown Hoyas were bounced by the DePaul Blue Demons and St. John’s Red Storm respectively and that trend will have to continue on Wednesday if fellow first-round victors Notre Dame and Seton Hall are to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive.

That will be no easy task as four games are on the slate for Wednesday with four schools opening their tournament after a first round bye.

In game one the Providence Friars (18-12, 10-8) will face the DePaul Blue Demons (9-23, 0-18) who are coming off a stunning win over Cincinnati. There should be plenty of motivation for the Friars who likely need a win or two to get into the NCAA tournament while the Blue Demons would need a conference championship. In their only meeting this year Providence knocked off DePaul 62-54. Tip-off for Wednesday’s game is 12:00 p.m. ET.

The Marquette Golden Eagles (23-8, 12-6) will open their Big East tournament with a match-up against the St. John’s Red Storm (16-16, 6-12) at 2:30 p.m. ET. While the Golden Eagles are a lock to get into the NCAA tournament they could certainly use a win as they’ve dropped four games in a row. St. John’s would like to avenge a 73-59 loss to Marquette and keep their dreams alive.

In what may be the most interesting match-up of the day the West Virginia Mountaineers (21-10, 10-8) will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (18-13, 8-10) with both teams looking at the game as a must-win. West Virginia would likely earn a ticket to the NCAA tournament regardless of the outcome but a win would certainly solidify their trip while the Irish need a win just to keep their hopes alive. In their only meeting this year the Mountaineers beat the Irish 79-68. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Finishing off the Big East tournament schedule for Wednesday will be the Syracuse Orange (23-8, 11-7) facing off against the Seton Hall Pirates (17-14, 7-11) at 9:00 p.m. ET. Syracuse boosted their NCAA resume with five wins in their final six games but could certainly use a run in the Big East tournament to better their position. For Seton Hall the only chance to dance would come if they win the conference tournament and they face a difficult task as they face a squad that blasted them 100-76 earlier this year.
