The
Supreme Court in Zimbabwe has ordered the state to release jailed MDC member
Roy Bennett on bail but have added new conditions that further restrict the ministerial
nominee.
Bennett
was arrested on Feb. 13 and charged with plotting to kill President Robert
Mugabe, an accusation he has strongly denied. The arrest came on the same day
that MDC ministers were sworn in to the new power-sharing government formed by
Mugabe and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Bennett
has been named by the MDC as deputy agriculture minister and his arrest added
tension to an already tenuous political situation. On several occasions Bennett
has state that his arrest was an attempt by Mugabe’s ZANU-PF to destabilize the
power-sharing government.
Following
Bennett’s arrest the High Court ruled that he be freed on $2,000 bail and ordered
to report to police twice a week but the state appealed that decision and
attempted to have the bail revoked but the Supreme Court supported the High
Court’s decision.
While
Bennett was granted bail the Supreme Court pushed the amount to $5,000 and
ordered him to report to police three times a week.
