Sharaud
Curry scored 25 points, Weyinmi Efejuku added 23 points and 5 assists and Geoff
McDermott added 8 points and 9 rebounds as the Providence Friars overcame a
determined DePaul Blue Demons squad 83-79 on Wednesday to advance to the third
round of the Big East conference tournament.
It
certainly wasn’t easy for the Friars as they had to overcome a 31 point effort from
Will Walker and a 30 point, 8 rebound game from Dar Tucker to get the win. The
two combined to shoot 46 of DePaul’s 63 field goal attempts ad were 10-25 from
beyond the three-point line.
The
Friars were in need of a win on Wednesday to help their chances of reaching the
NCAA tournament and DePaul was doing everything they could to earn the upset.
That bid lasted into the later stages of the second half as Tucker put the Blue
Demons up 61-55 with 8:28 left in the game but the Friars would eventually
answer and when Jeff Xavier buried a three-pointer to give Providence the lead
64-62 they would never trail again.
Providence
shot 53 percent from the floor on the day and while they hit just 69 percent
from the foul-line the Blue Demons were much worse, hitting a dismal 52 percent
from the stripe.
