Binge drinking dangerous in teenage years

Teenage years affected by binge drinking

Binge drinking at any age can cause irreversible, detrimental damage. A recent study released by the online version of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, shows that teenagers are particularly vulnerable to the effects of binge drinking. The research shows that heavy drinking by teenagers, particularly females, can detrimentally impact brain cell growth.

“Binge drinking is dangerous” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Canaan, CT. “Teenagers’ brains are at a crucial point in time for development. While it’s true that most cognitive programming takes place within the first five years of life, the brain continues to mature through the teen years, further refining the cognitive development that has taken place thus far. Teens can preempt this growth through binge drinking, stunting progress in areas such as memory, recollection, math and sports development. We must make certain that we not only educate America’s youth on the dangers of underage drinking, but that we emphasize the negative future impact of binge drinking during the teenage years.”
