Effects of alcohol related to stressful environments

Stress impacts alcohol effects

It has long been known that stress is a factor in many health-related problems and now, it seems, alcohol consumption has also made that list.

Alcohol normally affects a person in one of two ways; they will either become excited and talkative, or they will become lethargic and unable to speak. Research at the University of Chicago shows that those individuals who become excited after drinking actually become more lethargic if they are exposed to stress prior to consuming alcohol. Conversely, those who are generally lethargic after heavy drinking, become less drowsy, and their cravings for alcohol actually intensify when exposed to stress prior to drinking.

“One of the fundamental principles of rehab is to make certain that the addicted individual learns how to cope with stress,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “That is one of the basic skills we teach in our addiction treatment program. This study further bolsters the importance of stress management in rehab and in lifelong recovery. Addicted individuals tend to use alcohol as a coping mechanism, many times in response to stressful situations, providing a means of escape. In our program, we help an individual recognize the first signs of a stressful situation and how to appropriately respond to that stress. That is one of the many reasons that our holistic drug rehab program is second to none.”

Under normal circumstances, an individual expects a certain effect after consuming alcohol. To make certain that the participants’ responses weren’t conditioned by known consumption, each were given either an IV drip of alcohol or saline, making the study truly blind and a first of its kind.
